Project Manager (Contracts)–Renewable Energy (Hybrid in-office, Portland, OR / Houston, TX)

$125,000–$132,000 DOE + Bonus + SIB + Unlimited PTO

Sandymount Search is looking for an experienced project manager (PM) with particular expertise in high-value contract management. This role is part of the Commercial division of one of the leading global manufacturers in the renewable energy business where contract negotiations are a vital part of the sales process contributing to company value and growth. The PM (Contracts) is a customer-facing role and will also work closely with internal stakeholders including Sales, Construction and Legal. In addition to being a highly efficient and organized administrator, you will need to bring commercial acumen, superb oral and written communication skills, negotiation skills and the ability to draft contractual language when necessary. The ability to work cross-functionally, listen well, comprehend the issues that arise (and any associated risks) and propose solutions is vital. Relevant experience in energy, construction or capital infrastructure would be applicable and specific experience in renewable energy and/or manufacturing would be very valuable.

The PM will support the business’ commercial contracting function for new sales agreements, and other types of sales agreements as needed. This will include:

  • Negotiating terms and conditions with customers for complex contracts $100M–$1B in value.

  • Leading multi-departmental team through the negotiation process, including development of offers and counteroffers; review and approvals of contracts and exhibits; and timely, efficient closings.

    Supporting ongoing account management functions to capture increased value and meet changing project conditions, including through contract amendment and improvements.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Project manage all aspects of negotiating supply, service, repower, and supply & installation contracts, including administrative and substantive responsibilities, from internal kick-off meetings through handover of an executed agreement to Construction and Service teams.

  • Support internal and external Legal team in document preparation.

  • With input from internal stakeholders, develop the company’s position on terms and conditions, ensuring that stakeholders’ concerns are represented appropriately in the negotiation and the final contract; delegate decision making and accountability as appropriate in the organization.

  • Manage negotiation process:  liaise with customer representatives, set the timeline, arrange and manage meetings, and coordinate internal agreement on negotiating tactics.

  • Coordinate and manage internal review, approval and closing processes, and ensure that final agreements embody acceptable balance of risk and value for the company.

  • Represent the “voice of the customer” when interacting with internal departments and stakeholders to agree on solutions that achieve customer and company goals.

  • Effective written and oral communication skills; able to express oneself clearly and in technical and non-technical terms.

  • Ability to establish and maintain good relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.

  • Good influencing skills, able to motivate, empower and work with a range of people.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Engineering, technical, commercial or legal degree ideal.   Degrees in less relevant fields must be supplemented by appropriate professional experience. Qualified paralegals with relevant industry experience are also welcome.

  • Two years’ experience in contract management, commercial operations or commercial negotiation, including the management of complex commercial or other types of projects (i.e., discrete timelines, multiple stakeholders, changing conditions and objectives).

  • Ideally two years’ experience in the energy industry.  Experience in similar heavy manufacturing or capital infrastructure environments is also acceptable.   

  • Demonstrated ability to lead project teams in a matrixed, global environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to meet cost and schedule commitments.

  • Ability to thrive in a performance culture and in a changing work environment.

  • Superior written and verbal communication and leadership skills; strong customer relations and problem-solving skills; demonstrated ability to negotiate to satisfactory outcomes in a high-pressure commercial environment.

PREFERRED:

  • MBA or similar degree.

  • 5+ years of directly related commercial experience centered on contracts and working knowledge of contract law.

  • Experience working in a capital equipment industry or a construction-related industry.

  • Candidates with 10 years’ relevant experience outside primary commercial scope (e.g., engineering, legal, procurement, capital infrastructure or construction management) may be considered at a more senior level.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

The expected annual base salary for this position is approx. $125,000–$132,000 depending on experience. The compensation package also includes variable compensation in the form of an annual company bonus (based on global performance) as well as a sales incentive bonus. The company also offers generous benefits, including health and retirement, a company-paid cell phone, and has an unlimited PTO policy.  The company follows a hybrid work schedule, in which employees work in-office on Tuesday through Thursday, and have the option of working from home on Monday and Friday. This position can be based in either Portland, OR or Houston, Tx (downtown).
